| Early Recordings of Nada Surf Founders Resurface on Previously Unreleased Album from Because Because | [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir cette image] | | |
Sunday, 07 February 2010 | Years before Nada Surf became "Popular" in 1996, vocalist/guitarist Matthew Caws and bassist Daniel Lorca were members of a noisier and trippier East Coast quartet called Because Because Because (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/becausebb). Featuring British [color:aa42=green !important][color:aa42=green !important]singer Robert Randall and hardcore drummer Blake Gomez, Because Because Because developed a regional underground following in the early '90s, but the group's [color:aa42=green !important][color:aa42=green !important]songs were locked in the vaults and remained unreleased until now. Because Because Because's long-overdue self-titled debut consists of six tracks that were recorded in 1991 and 1992, all of which include future Nada Surf stars Caws on guitars and backing vocals and Lorca on bass and backing vocals.
Despite that one-half of the line-up would eventually form Nada Surf, Because Because Because reflect a different era and attitude, blending the moody, English post-punk angst of Echo & the Bunnymen and the Jesus & Mary Chain with the guitar snarl of American college-radio icons the Pixies and Sonic Youth. The leadoff single, "Holler," blasts into hyper speed with a Bunnymen-like stadium roar and a bracing New Order drone. "I'm incredibly proud of it. The pain of bringing together diverse musical approaches and influences resulted in some great material," Randall explained.
Born from the ashes of the underground [color:aa42=green !important][color:aa42=green !important]band The Cost of Living, Because Because Because had a short-lived yet promising existence that eventually blew a fuse due to personal differences. "It certainly wasn't smooth sailing, that's for sure," Randall revealed. "I had just arrived in New York from London, bringing with me all of my English influences and cockiness. We had completely different ways of working. I think we all learned a lot from each other. We also fought a lot. The three of them were better musicians than me. I was a stronger songwriter and didn't care too much about musicianship, which used to piss Matthew off. Every time we did a song I would sing it slightly differently according to how I felt at the time. Matthew and Daniel were like machines; they could play the material the same way every time. Blake was caught in the middle. Matthew was very headstrong in those days, never having a problem telling Blake and I how we should do something. We resisted, wanting to do things in our ways. Our rehearsals were often very unpleasant affairs. Nevertheless, apparently great things came from adversity." Eventually, the group fell apart. Caws and Lorca continued working together in Nada Surf while Gomez split to "play harder [color:aa42=green !important][color:aa42=green !important]music with like-minded peers." (Gomez also recently released his first solo effort, the metallic Regret Destroys You Tonight).
Because Because Because's self-titled CD is now available on CDBaby and downloads on iTunes, and will soon be available on all other major online distribution outlets. Nearly forgotten in the alternative-rock revolution of the early '90s, Because Because Because will now reach a wide audience that hadn't heard them before as well as refresh the memories of those who did. "I am told that we were loved," Randall said. "But, to be honest, I can't remember - I was usually stoned back then." |

| The Arab Strap box set, Scenes Of A Sexual Nature, is now scheduled for release in April. Details from Chemikal Underground:"The boxset reissue of Arab Strap's first two albums is finally nearing completion with a provisional release date slated for mid-April. The final touches have been applied over the past week with the final flourish, a numbered certificate personally signed by Aidan and Malcolm, getting - quite literally - signed off as you read this electronic epistle. A reminder then, of exactly what this slab of enormo-wonderment comprises: * LP of Week Never Starts Round Here replete with artwork modifications reflecting Aidan's original 'vision'. * 2LP of Philophobia with revised sleeve artwork incorporating lyric/book effect. * Bonus 2LP featuring Arab Strap's first two Peel Sessions, rarities/tracks from old singles etc. and a live version of 'Girls Of Summer' from Chemikal's 5th Birthday Party, complete with John Peel's introduction. * The bonus 2LP also includes 'Daughters of Darkness'; a previously incomplete and unreleased track, recently finished in Chem19 by Aidan and Malcolm exclsuively for this box set. * A CD of live BBC material: Arab Strap's first ever concert at King Tuts in October 1996 and their live performance at T In The Park, July 1998. * A CD featuring tracks from all of Arab Strap's WNSRH and Philophobia-era EPs. * A data disc featuring MP3s of all the vinyl only tracks and movie files for videos 'Here We Go' and '(Afternoon) Soaps'. * A complete replica of Arab Strap's original 'green frog' demo cassette as sent to Chemikal Underground in 1996. * Full, exclusive sleeve notes by both Aidan and Malcolm. * A full colour poster featuring press clippings/reviews/Strap-related Falkirk hysteria. * A numbered certificate. individually signed by Malcolm and Aidan. So, in summary: 5LPs, 3CDs, 1 cassette, 1 poster, 1 signed certificate, over 70 tracks, only 1,000 made, a lot of hard work, a great deal of excitiement... Pre-ordering details are currently being finalised with a proposed retail price in the region of £65." | |

| DVD, CD and double LP (in special packaging exclusive to this box set), PLUS a live DVD of the band’s 10th Anniversary show, as well as an exclusive coloured vinyl 7” (various colours) featuring live versions of ‘Icky Thump’ and ‘The Wheels On The Bus’, hardcover book of photographs shot by Autumn de Wilde with a foreword by Jim Jarmusch, and a silk-screened print (chosen at random from a selection of six designs) by Rob Jones. In the summer of 2007, The White Stripes embarked on a cross-country Canadian tour to accomplish their goal of performing in every province and territory across the expansive northern nation. Presented here is a unique documentation of that journey, providing a fascinating look into the on and off stage lives of one of the world’s most enigmatic bands. Having first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2009, the film 'Under Great White Northern Lights' documents the band playing to crowds in towns of all sizes across the Great White North - from traditional venues to matinee gigs at unusual locations such as a bowling alley, a boat and even on a city bus - culminating in a momentous 10th Anniversary show at the historic Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. A captivating mix of striking live footage and poignant off-stage moments, this visually stirring and emotive feature length film celebrates the band’s 10 year history, bringing the band full circle in their career to a place reminiscent of how they first started out; shows where no one knew who they were, where they were left to make a first impression with their music. The live album continues that celebration and is a perfect companion piece to the film, featuring 16 songs recorded at various shows throughout the Canadian tour - a collection that captures all the aural intensity and spontaneity that The White Stripes have become known for. A compelling reflection of the band’s career - both the live album and the documentary will allow fans to reminisce about where they were when they first heard The White Stripes, while also adding extraordinary pieces of work to their already stunning artistic cannon. "Arty but accessible, Malloy’s film is a treat for any White Stripes fan: a document of a global band visiting the ends of the Earth to deliver their delicious clatter to their most out-of-way followers" – NME"… reveals as much about Canadian culture as it does about Jack and Meg White’s friendship, work ethic and music" – Rolling Stone"One-of-a-kind scenes… that make this film a true gem" – Spin"… can credibly be included alongside such canonical rock-docs as 'Gimme Shelter' and 'Don't Look Back'" – LA Times"… capture[s] the quirkiness of the entire tour, but also the intense emotional moments" – Reuters"A pure blast of the fierce joy of live rock'n'roll" – MSNCD Tracklisting1. mais je ne suis pas opposé à ça il l'a vendu au départ à un prix normal ensuite ça spécule, mais les collectiors c'est ça tandis qu'à un prix débilement élevé dès le départ, c'est écoeurant, surtout pour ceux qui achètent encore des disques finalement c'est toujours ceux qui ont les moyens qui peuvent se permettre | |
